Program Philosophy

At WLCNS, we believe children are capable, curious, and full of potential. Our program is guided by the Ministry of Education’s How Does Learning Happen? pedagogy, which recognizes that learning happens through strong relationships among children, families, and early learning professionals.

We provide a warm, inclusive, and engaging environment where children feel safe, supported, and excited to learn. Through play-based and inquiry-driven experiences, children are encouraged to explore, create, communicate, and build confidence as they grow.

The WLNCS supports and maintains the Early Learning Framework Principles outline by the Ministry of Education:

  1. The early years set the foundation for lifelong learning, behaviour, health and well-being;

  2. Partnerships with families and communities help early childhood settings to best meet the needs of young children;

  3. Respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion is vital for the optimal development and learning;

  4. A planned program supports early learning;

  5. Play is a means to learning that capitalizes on children’s natural curiosity and exuberance; and,

  6. Knowledgeable and responsive early childhood educators and other early learning practitioners are essential to early childhood settings.

Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.

~ Helen Keller

Belonging

A sense of belonging is at the heart of our program. We support children as they develop meaningful relationships with their peers and educators in a welcoming, respectful environment. Each child and family is valued for their unique background, strengths, and experiences. Our program is inclusive and accessible, ensuring every child feels accepted and supported.

Well-Being

We promote children’s physical, emotional, and social well-being by encouraging independence, self-help skills, and positive self-regulation. Educators create nurturing routines and responsive interactions that build confidence and a strong sense of self. Children are supported at their own pace and encouraged to care for themselves and others in a safe and respectful environment.

Engagement

Children learn best when they are actively engaged. Our days are filled with hands-on learning through play, exploration, and creativity. Children participate in crafts, painting, music, stories, songs, sensory play, and both indoor and outdoor activities. Educators observe children’s interests and intentionally plan experiences that extend learning in areas such as early literacy, math, science, and social development.

Expression

Children express their learning in many ways. At WLCNS, we provide opportunities for children to share their ideas, creativity, and feelings through art, movement, language, music, and play. Educators listen, observe, and respond thoughtfully, offering materials and experiences that encourage children to explore their ideas and express themselves with confidence.

Partnerships with Families

We value families as partners in their child’s learning journey. Open communication and collaboration with families help support each child’s development and strengthen the connection between home and school.
